Session Six
This session will show you how to place a Song or Chord Progression in to another Key.
This will be of real benefit to your Guitar Playing.

For example, this chord progression
in the Key of C major:
C / / / Am / / / Dm / / / G / / /
in the Key of G major would be:
G / / / Em / / / Am / / / D / / /
in the key of D major would be:
D / / / Bm / / / Em / / / A / / /

All three progressions above can be shown by using
Roman Numerals:

I / / / VIm / / / IIm / / / V / / /

So using the Key of C major as an example:

C      Dm      Em      F       G      Am
I       IIm      IIIm    IV      V     VIm

This whole process is called  "transposition".
Below is a Key Chord Chart that will help you
understand changing a chord progression from one key to another.

CHORDS, KEYS & TRANSPOSITION
Reading from left to right below, you have the 7 basic chords that
make up each key shown.
So the first key is C major with its chords:
C Dm Em F G Am Bdim.
Then there is G major and next we have key D major and its chords and so on...

I         IIm       IIIm       IV        V        VIm      VIIdim
                          C        Dm        Em         F          G       Am       Bdim
                          G        Am        Bm        C           D       Em       F#dim
                           D       Em        F#m        G          A       Bm       C#dim
                          A        Bm        C#m       D          E       F#m      G#dim
                          E        F#m      G#m       A          B       C#m      D#dim

F        Gm        Am        Bb        C        Dm        Edim
Bb       Cm        Dm        Eb        F        Gm        Adim
Eb       Fm        Gm        Ab       Bb      Cm        Ddim

Take a look at the chords above and you'll see that in the key of  C major
the "IIIm" chord is Em (E minor).
The "IIIm" chord in the Key of   G major is B minor.
In the key of  D major  the "IIIm" chord is F# minor.

Say we have a song chord progression in key C major that is:

C / / / G / / / A m / / / Em / / / F / / / G / / / C / / / C / / /

using Roman numerals this would be

I / / / V / / / VIm / / / IIIm / / / IV / / / V / / / I / / / I / / /

So, you can now use this to place the original chord
progression in C major into any of the other 7 keys above.

Let's put it in to the key of   A major

The first chord is I   -   so chord I in key A is A itself.
The second chord is V   -   chord V in key A is E.
The next chord is VIm   -   this chord is F# minor in  key A.
The next chord is IIIm   -   this is C# minor.
The next chord is IV - which is D in key A.
The final two chords are V  and  I   -  chords E  and  A.

So the new progression in the key of A major will be:

A / / / E / / / F#m / / / C#m / / / D / / / E / / / A / / / A / / /
I / / / V / / / VIm / / / IIIm / / / IV / / / V / / / I / / / I / / /

Try putting the above chord progression into the key of G major.
